It was 9:30 p.m. on a Saturday night. We had planned to try Tanaka Saimin after watching a movie at the Hawaii Film Festival at Dole Cannery, but Tanaka's was closed (they close nightly at 9:00 p.m.). Since we had saimin on our mind, we headed to Old Saimin House in Kalihi near the post office. For you late night eaters, they are open until 11 p.m. Tuesday thru Saturday.
Here is a small saimin. The amount of noodles they give for a small is pretty generous.
Here is a pic of my friend's large won ton min. They give 6 large dumplings and oodles of noodles.
Noodles al dente.
I like to go to the Old Saimin House because they have a big parking lot, they are open late, and they have air conditioning. Their noodles are nice and curly. Their dashi is a little on the light side, but it could be that I'm just used to ramen broth which has way more salt and flavor.
